Re-signifying Classics: An Approach to Federico García Lorca is an exciting one-week Performing Arts summer course designed for artists from across Europe eager to engage with one of Spain’s most iconic literary and theatrical voices. Through a deep dive into Lorca’s poetry, plays, and the historical context in which he lived and created, participants will explore how his work speaks to contemporary society. How do his themes of freedom, identity, and artistic expression resonate with us today?
Through a mix of creative workshops, discussions, and hands-on performance training, we will reinterpret his works and discover new ways to bring them to life on stage. The course will culminate in a final performance inspired by Lorca, blending tradition with innovation to create something truly unique. Whether you are new to Lorca or already familiar with his legacy, this course offers a fresh and thought-provoking journey into his world—one that will challenge and inspire you as a 21st-century artist.
We'll start with an on-line session (of roughly 1.5h) where we will introduce basic concepts and invite you to work on lightweight exercises in preparation for the in-person event.
01
Following, you will travel to Girona to participate in a one-week in-person workshop.
02
We'll conclude with a wrap-up on-line session where we will reflect on the learnings done throughout the summer school. The following page provides the details of our program

THE SUMMER SCHOOL WILL INVOLVE THREE PHASES
Preparatory session / on-line
Tuesday June 24 (online) (Time TBD 1.5 hours)
In this online session we will introduce the program, as well as each other. We will share our references, interests and influences. We will also have a brief look at the Spanish historical context
(especially the Civil War 1936-1939).
Wrap-up session / on-line
Thursday June 26 (online) (Time TBD 1.5 hours)
We will discover (or rediscover) the Spanish artist Federico Garcia Lorca. We will talk about his work, symbolism, universe, life and death, and we will start to understand what we have in common with him.
Summer school
Monday June 30
On our first day we will do some cohesion group exercises, and a big group exercise where we’ll get to know each other through theater, music and performance. This will also be an opportunity to share abilities, interests, and artistic preferences, and to create a workspace where students feel comfortable.
Tuesday July 1st (Barcelona trip)
We will discover Federico’s relationship with the city of Barcelona, and with Catalan culture. Barcelona was a very important city for him: “There is the Mediterranean, the spirit, the adventure, the high dream of perfect love. There are palm trees, people from all countries, surprising commercial advertisements, Gothic towers and a rich urban high tide made by typewriters. How comfortable I feel there with that air and that passion!”
Wednesday July 2
We will start to interact directly with Federico Garcia Lorca’s work. Some of his works will be proposed, and we will individually create a little scenic piece inspired by one of them. This way we will see different approaches to the same work.
Thursday July 3
In this session, a similar formula as Wednesday will be followed, but extended in time. Groups of five or six people will be formed and they will have the whole day to prepare a stage piece around one of Federico Garcia Lorca’s works. They will work independently with the supervision and guidance of the workshop assistants.
Friday July 4
The pieces they prepared the day before will be presented. We will not only see the result, but also talk about the creative process of each group.
Wednesday July 9 (online) (Time TBD 1.5 hours)
This session is meant to be a closing of the program. We will share experiences and talk about what happened during the week we have been together.
